Women don’t know how important their thyroid is…some ladies don’t even know what their thyroid is. The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland that sits low on the front of the neck. Your thyroid lies below your Adam’s apple, along the front of the windpipe, and it secretes several hormones, collectively called thyroid hormones. The main hormone is thyroxine, also called T4. Thyroid hormones act throughout the body, influencing metabolism, growth and development, and body temperature (WebMD). Through the hormones it produces, the thyroid influences almost all of the metabolic processes in your body. The thing we as ladies need to know is that when we have problems with the thyroid, our whole body can have problems. The most common thyroid problems involve abnormal production of thyroid hormones - too much can result in a condition known as hyperthyroidism, and insufficient hormone production leads to hypothyroidism (WebMD). If you feel off balance, or maybe your neck looks a little larger than usual, make sure at your next check-up to ask your doctor about your thyroid. It’s amazing a small gland can cause a host of issues.
